BBQ's

Most of us love a good BBQ, as do I.

The "Beer-BQ"

This was my wife's idea, so no credit can be taken for its originality, but the construction was my doing..

This BBQ started life as an aluminium lager keg. I split it along it's length (measuring and marking out was harder than you'd think), hinged the two halves, made a mount for the shelf to sit at three different heights, and a keep-warm tray that folds away whn you close the lid!

The NMR Superconducting Magnet BBQ, or "NMR-BQ"!

For our Engagement party, we thought we'd host it at home with a BBQ. As we had a lot of people coming, this called for a BBQ bigger than the Beer-BQ...

At the time I was working for Bruker Biospin as a Superconducting Magnet specialist... which gave me opportunity to adapt an old scrap Oxford Instruments 400Mhz NMR cryo magnet for the BBQ!

I chopped it in half along its length (like the Beer-BQ), TIG welded four triangular stainless brackets onto the corners to bolt the legs on. The main bottom flange allowed gave a nice strong point to bolt the two halves together.

It ended up being 7 feet long, took x9 bags of charcoal, and an oxy-acetylene set to light it!
