Originally an American design designated the "AN" (Army Navy) series of connectors, they are also designated "UK-AN" connectors when manufactured by Plessey, and "MS" when manufactured by Amphenol, Hellermann and Cannon.
In 2008 Cannon published a company history brochure that states they were the original designer of the AN series connector in the 1940's. As such, in conversation people often refer to AN/MS connectors as "Cannon plugs" regardless of the actual manufacturer.
These connectors conform to standards which have evolved over the years:
Date | Standard |
---|---|
1939 | AN9534 |
1949 | MIL-C-5015 |
1994 | MIL-C-5015G (final revision) |
2000 | MIL-DTL-5015H |
2009 | SAE-AS50151 |
The common standard that most people quote is MIL-C-5015, so this web page is titled thus.
