REPLICATION
This knob assembly in use is a replica. In researching these knobs, it transpired that there were several versions of it used for different Mk's of Lightning, e.g.:
- in the the F Mk. 2A the knob is similar but the lettering is engraved upside down,
- the F Mk. 6 uses a "Translite" or "Plastek" illuminated panel disk instead of an aluminium disk,
- and the F Mk.53 has a different style of grip, and many more stop positions for different armaments...
..all making a T Mk. 5 or T Mk. 55 knob difficult to locate, but at least these two "T-Birds" used the same knob.
A good friend, Trevor Garrod fashioned the aluminium hexagon and disk, and I used Inkscape to produce a sticker to mimic the engraving of the original. All of this was based on estimated measurements from photographs, and just general familiarity with the aircraft, so some measurements may be slightly off.
SIMULATION
As weaponry is not modelled in flightgear, this knob has limited use, but can be used for setting the height of the aiming target on the L.F.S. (Light Fighter Sight).
