Darren Harbar photography training day
@ Shuttleworth Collection 14-09-2016

Fantastic day out at the Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden, led by professional photographer Darren Harbar.

Included classroom session, photography session around the museum where Darren was on hand to give one-on-one help and support in taking creative photographs, followed by portrait photography practice outside with WW2 reenactors. We also had the pleasure of a flying Tiger Moth to practice some Shutter Priority photography with, trying to get motion blur on propeller blades, while keeping the airframe in focus..

My modest budget setup was was a Canon 650D camera body with Tamron 16 to 300mm lens. Images on this page have been reduced to 20% size and 90% quality to save my server space, but you get the idea.

De Havilland DH.88 Comet

My absolute favourite aircraft of the Collection, the Comet - and we were allowed up close to it!

This 1934 multiple record breaking aircraft is simply stunning to look at, especially in the bright red colour. It's one of two original surviving Comets, and the only one airworthy at this point in time. Shuttleworth's Comet page.

Westland Lysander

1938 built, this massive aircraft's big features are it's wheel spats, which I tried to make use of in this image by laying on the floor. Shuttleworth's Lysander page.

Hawker Sea Hurricane 1B

Built in 1941, it is the worlds last airworthy Sea Hurricane 1B. It was surrounded bby clutter in the museum, but has a striking look with it's tail supported up in the air. Shuttleworth's Sea Hurricane page.

Gloster Gladiator - and some reenacting

It was nice to get the opportunity to help push the Gladiator our of the hangar and across the grass, into a position where we could take period photographs without mains power pylons and mobile phone masts in the background!

We were joined by two husband and wife reenactors in period WW2 gear to add to the photographs. For us, as novice photographers, it was a good experience in how to work with live models to get the best out of the session! Shuttleworth's Gladiator page.

Tiger Moth

This 1944 Aircraft was doing some flying on the day, which allowed us to practice some camera work on it! Shuttleworth's Tiger Moth page.
