Mk2 Vauxhall Astra GTE Digital Dashboard / "Digi-Dash"

Sold 21-08-2015

Digital dashboards were a bit of a statement of the 1980's. Liquid crystal displays were still a relatively new / modern invention, and microprocessors were becomming more accessible and commercially viable to include in units such as this.

A rare item these days, as these were snaffled up through the 90's for installation into Vauxhall Novas and other cars.

How things change...

When these dashboards are turned on, ie: every time the key is turned in the ignition, the dash goes through a self-test sequence, as shown below. during this sequence, 127 MPH is boasted... This was the top speed of the original 8V Astra GTE (the software didn't get updated for the faster 16V 20XE).

In these modern days of fuel economy being one of the top sales features of most cars, and increased awareness of road safety, you have to question the wisdom in reminding the driver at the start of each and every journey just how fast he could be driving!
