Nomenclature explanations
Type P = large size, Type Q = small size.
Sub-type 2 masks (P2 and Q2) are fitted with a Mk. 7 Bayonet union plug (6D/2053) for connection to an ejection seat PEC hose.
No suffix masks (P2 and Q2) use an early style exoskeleton and solid wire Gabb harness.
A suffix masks (P2A and Q2A) use a later style exoskeleton with chain toggle harness. Note: In the 1970's the chain toggle harness had become standard, and the meaning of suffix A was changed to represent the installation of a longer (16") oxygen hose, not required in the Lightning.
B suffix masks (P2B and Q2B) are fitted with a modified rubber facepiece and exoskeleton to accommodate a smaller microphone.
C suffix masks (P2C and Q2C) are fitted with the smaller microphone (as per B), and an anti-suffocation valve, and in the Lightning are to be used in conjunction with the Mk. 1A suffix PEC, fitted with anti-drowning valve.
(med) suffix masks are fitted with a special medical rubber facepiece for aircrew where skin irritation/dermatitis may occur with standard facepieces, officially titled as "anti dermatitic" facepieces.
Type P and PA series masks are fitted with Type 59 microphones (10A/19043) and Type 1273 switches (10F/1766). Type PB and Q series masks are fitted with miniature microphone and switch assembly (Part No. 13125). The miniature microphone is smaller in diameter, so results in the Type PB and Q series masks having a smaller microphone aperture cast in the rubber facepiece and a smaller hole in the exo-skeleton than those of the Type P and PA series masks.
EXAMPLES
EXAMPLE No. 1:
Stores Ref. No.: | 6D/2307 |
Type: | P2A |
This original example of a Type P2A oxygen mask is in remarkable shape given it's possible age, and noting that A.P.1182E (paragraph 60) states that 9 months is a typical service life for the rubber facepiece in the UK, and 6 months overseas.
It uses the early Type 59 microphone and Type 1273 switch. As the P2A does not include an anti-suffocation valve, it is intended for use with a Mk.1 PEC hose.
Oxygen mask Type P2A, internal view showing;
inspiratory valve and ice guard (left),
microphone Type 59 (upper mid),
expiratory valve (lower mid).
SIMULATION
The main use of a mask in this simulator will be use of the microphone in the audio system for communication between participants, and for VOIP during online multiplayer sessions.
